History of Marconi

Guglielmo Marconi

Born 25/04/1874 - Died 20/071937

Transmitting Electrical Signals

Radio

In 1895 Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi built the equipment and transmitted electrical signals through the air from one end of his house to the other, and then from the house to the garden. These experiments were, in effect, the dawn of practical wireless telegraphy or radio.

Following the successes of his experiments at home, Marconi became obsessed with the idea of sending messages across the Atlantic. He built a transmitter, 100 times more powerful than any previous station, at Poldhu, on the southwest tip of England, and in November 1901 installed a receiving station at St. John's Newfoundland.

On December 12, 1901, he received signals from across the ocean. News of this achievement spread around the world, and he was acclaimed by outstanding scientists, including Thomas A. Edison.

Inventor Bio

Marconi was born in Bologna, Italy. His father was Italian, his mother, Irish. He was educated first in Bologna and later in Florence. Then he went to the technical school in Leghorn, where he studied physics.

Marconi received many honours including the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1909. He was sent as a delegate to the Peace Conference in Paris in 1919, in which capacity he signed the peace treaties with Austria and Bulgaria.

CHELMER VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL AND STOP THE TRAFFIK

Students from Chelmer Valley High School mainly from Marconi learnt about people trafficking in their school assemblies. Miss Pembroke sent out postcards to all the forms so that they could get involved with the project. Over 500 students signed declaration cards and put them up on a Freedom Wall which was at the back of Miss Pembroke’s room. Once they were all up and the wall was finished it was time to get the cards back down and sent off to Stop the Traffik so that the government can see how much support there is for solving this problem.

June 2008 - Some members of Marconi took part in a litter pick down the paths to the hospital and the church in Broomfield. This was done in partnership with Jackie Lane, NEAT Officer from Chelmsford Borough Council who provided all the safety equipment. The 21 students who took part in the litter pick were doing this to help the local community and have also raised money for the Essex fm charity 'Essex Kids'. In total 30 bags of rubbish were collected and the students really enjoyed helping the local community with the public even saying thank you to them while on the litter pick.

Marconi House have raised £140 for Essex Kids this year and we hope to carry on with the fund raising next year.

Marconi board is now in Humanities area so please check it out for up todate competitions/pictures etc
