2010 Chelmer Valley High School has been awarded Artsmark - Arts Council England has awarded the Artsmark in recognition of the schools commitment to, and excellence in, arts education.
We are a lively team of teachers who are committed to helping students appreciate Art & Design. We teach a range of disciplines including painting, drawing, printmaking, 3D design and ceramics. The curriculum enables students to explore a variety of art work relevant to them, among these are Landscape, Portraiture, War and Conflict and Africa Art.
Students in Year 7 study lots of different artists and cultures and do painting, drawing and clay work. In Year 8 they work with clay, wire, cardboard and look at abstract art and in Year 9 they study art from centuries ago to very modern day images. All students paint and draw and have the chance to work with digital media.
GCSE and A level artwork is excellent and all students have work exhibited at the end of the year. There are opportunities for Art trips and visits to galleries and the sixth form have visited Barcelona and Paris.
The Art team are:
Mrs J Watson – Head of Area
Mrs S Bedford - Art Teacher
Mr J Young - Art Teacher

What's happening in 2011...
As part of our Creative Curriculum, the Creative Area organise a Creative Arts day for all year 8 pupils in July. This day is a chance for pupils to explore a different culture, through the Creative Arts and investigate materials, skills and processes they may not have experienced before. In 2008 the year 8’s enjoyed “China Day”, in 2009 pupils experienced “America Day” and in 2010 we explored the theme of "Time." This year we are planning something slightly different and some KS3 pupils will experience the Arts at Chelmer in an alternative manner. We hope this will involve pupils at Broomfield Primary School and details of the planning will be available shortly.
Both the GCSE and A level exams are imminent and there will be an opportunity for parents and students to view the Artwork in the Summer Exhibition on the evening in July and possibly before this, directly after the exam moderation process. Information will be made available nearer the time. The evening in July is also the presentation of our Summer Concert so it should prove to be a bumper Creative display.
Students have worked with our visiting Artist in Residence on 4 Artworks, (the Engineering Timeline in the hall, the Humanities jigsaw, the MFL window and the Art Department sign). The students and Art team have produced two wonderful murals for English and Science. The G&T students are working with Mrs Bedford to produce some painted canvases for Broomfield Grange.
