Students in front of The Vatican
The Royal Palace
The Colosseum
The History department took 31 A-level pupils to Rome and Naples in the Feb half term. This was to help with the new Italian Unification course they are studying in year 12. While in Rome they visited the Roman Forum, Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Victor Emmanuel II plus the Vatican.
The second part of the trip was in Naples where they transferred to Sorrento en route stopping at places significant to Italian Unification. This included a one day excursion to Pompeii. The eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD buried this town under a mantle of pebbles, mud and volcanic ash. Today, the site has been preserved with original streets, houses and works of art of the day.
The next day they visited Herculaneum, a spectacularly well-preserved ruin protected by volcanic ash.
All students had a good time and we hope to run similar trips in the future.
