At Chelmer, we offer the OCR Nationals in ICT Level 3 course by OCR. This course offers students a more in-depth look at ICT in the modern workplace, and given an insight into its role in specialist careers. It is delivered in a work-related context to allow learners to develop an understanding of the ICT sector. An alternative to Applied GCE or similar exam-based courses, OCR Nationals provide on-going learning and assessment of the practical skills and knowledge required to succeed in ICT-related careers. Computers and the use of information technology is all around us and in our day-to-day lives. At A-level, students will learn new computer software in addition to enhancing the software they have already learnt at Key Stage 3 and 4, to enable them to choose the most appropriate software for the tasks that they need to undertake.
Lessons at A-Level ICT are personalised and interactive. We aim to make ICT learning fun by using video, group discussions and invite industry speakers to share their journey to succeed in ICT-related career such as website designers, graphic designers or computer solutions architect. Students are also invited to test new software and help choose suitable software to support their learning.
THE COURSE STRUCTURE:
Single Award = 4 mandatory units + 2 optional units (Certificate, one A-Level), 8 lessons fortnightly.
Double Award = 4 mandatory units + 8 optional units (Diploma, two A-Levels), 16 lessons fortnightly.
100% coursework, no exam. All units are internally assessed and moderated by an external moderator.

AS (LOWER SIXTH FORM)
At AS level, ICT is taught in dedicated computer suites 7 lessons fortnightly. 3 modules are covered in the first year :
Unit 1 : Digital Business Communication (mandatory unit)
In this unit, students develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of communication in a business context and learn how to use ICT in effective business communications. Areas covered are document and computer security in the workplace, the role and contribution of communication technology to business and the application of a presentation style to document creation.
Unit 2 : Collaborative Working (mandatory unit)
By successfully completing this unit, students have gained a thorough knowledge and understanding of collaboration as an essential skill in working towards a final product in ICT-related projects. Skills covered include planning as part of a group, investigating the use of ICT tools to support collaborative working and carrying out research for a group project—to produce a pull-out section for the Technology magazine.
Unit 14 : Cartooning & Animation
In this unit, In this unit students will develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of the world of cartooning and animation. They will investigate the animation industry, its products and technology, plan and develop a cartoon/animation character, examine the animation and the sequencing of a character, create and evaluate the cartoon/animation character.
A2 (UPPER SIXTH FORM)
At A2 level, ICT is taught in dedicated computer suites 8 lessons fortnightly. 3 modules are covered in the second year :
Unit 3 : Problem Solving (mandatory unit)
In this unit, students develop skills and knowledge which enable them to use various techniques to analyse and interpret numerical data. Some of the key skills taught here are : defining statistical problems, collecting data, using spreadsheets to store and analyse data and methods of data presentation.
Unit 4 : Creating a Digital Showcase (mandatory unit)
This unit teaches the skills required to develop an interactive media product to showcase an event or situation. As part of successfully completing this unit, students will be able to demonstrate how to specify requirements, design solutions and author an interactive media product.
Unit 10 : Digital Imaging Photography
In this unit, students will develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of the creative and technical aspects of digital photography. In the process of producing evidence to meet the assessment objectives for this unit, the students will cover a good level of understanding of photography using a digital camera, file types and data storage formats, other image sources of digital images, digital image manipulation and creation using image manipulation software and how to present photographs in a portfolio and evaluate.
