Year 10 Fitness

Year 10 Fitness

At Key Stage 4 all students will participate in two hours of Physical Education per week. Students are given greater responsibility by choosing which activity area to follow as well as taking on roles such as coach and referee within lessons. Although an element of choice is given, all students will fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum by completing two units out of games activities, fitness activities and gymnastic/dance activities. All students will also complete an athletics unit of work in Year 10.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION - GCSE

The structure of the course – examination board Edexcel

The GCSE Physical Education course is made up of 60% practical activities and 40% written paper.

 For the practical element, students must perform in four activities chosen from: 

  • Games activities
  • Gymnastic activities
  • Dance activities
  • Athletic activities
  • Adventurous activities, and
  • Swimming activities

Within the written paper, questions will be asked on the following three areas:

  • Exercise and training
  • Safety aspects and risk assessment in sports and physical activity
  • Applied anatomy and physiology

Students will be expected to achieve 60% in all end of unit tests and homework will be completed for both theory and practical lessons.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION - BTEC Sport and Leisure

As well as offering GCSE PE, students are also able to opt for BTEC in Sport and Leisure at Key Stage 4. This course is vocational and offers students a more coursework based option should the GCSE course not meet the students individual needs. The course outline is as follows:

  • Working in Sport and Leisure
  • The Healthy Body
  • Personal Effectiveness
  • Financial Management
  • Organising a Sport or Leisure event
  • Issues in Sport and Leisure
  • Taking Part in Sport
