KS4
At the end of Key Stage 3 students are given the opportunity to review their strengths and select, for Year 10, one area to specialise in. We are able to offer the following choices at GCSE; Electronics, Resistant Materials, Textiles and Graphics.
The aims of the course are to encourage students to use their designing and making skills to produce good quality products; to foster student’s capability in technology through activities which involve a range of situations, materials and processes.
Structure of the course
Examination boards;
AQA ~ Graphics, Electronics, Textiles & Resistant Materials.
Coursework element ~ 60%
Final examination ~ 40%
Each of the specialist areas follows a curriculum in year 10 that prepares students for completion of the coursework and provides opportunities to gain a number of more complex practical skills and knowledge, building on that gained at Key Stage 3. Throughout this key stage students are encouraged to continue with CAD/CAM and extend this into their GCSE coursework.
The coursework element commences in the Summer term of year 10. This consists of a single design and make activity selected from a range of AQA set tasks. The design portfolio is presented in A3 format and approximately 20 pages and communicates the design process to accompany the practical piece.
As part of the Controlled Assessment Criteria the design folder work should not be taken home. Some pages/tasks will be completed and conducted under examination conditions. Please click on the PDF documents below to view criteria.
