Year 9 Holocaust Day

Year 9 students learn about the Holocaust

On Wednesday 18th April, Hannah Lewis visited the year 9 students at Chelmer Valley to share her story of how she survived the Holocaust. Her testimony was followed by a question and answer session to enable students to better understand the nature of the Holocaust and to explore its lessons in more depth.

After listening to Hannah’s harrowing story, students split into groups to study poetry from Holocaust victims to inspire their own poems and to make factual booklets using ICT.  Some students wrote some fantastic pieces of poetry which have been displayed for others to read.  Groups of students also discussed the topic of the Bystanders during this horrific time.

Mrs Collier, History Teacher, said “we’d like to say a huge thank you to Hannah Lewis for sharing her incredible story with us. I think I speak for all year 9’s when I say that it was both moving and inspiring. Also a big well done to all year 9 students who showed true respect to Hannah and creativity when designing their own Holocaust Memorial. Hopefully it’s a day that will stay in the minds of our students and encourage feelings of tolerance and acceptance in the future.”
