Personal, Social and Health Education

At Chelmer Valley High School we believe that the education of students should not just focus on academic success, but also teach them the skills and knowledge necessary to stay safe, make healthy life choices and become responsible adults.  PSHE at Chelmer Valley changes from year to year, sensitive to the changing needs of students and the world we live in.  It is provided through classroom teaching encouraging discussion and group work, through topical plays and extensive liaison with external agencies that bring their expertise and unique perspective.  Topics include but are not limited to:

  • Internet safety
  • Drug and alcohol awareness
  • Dangers of smoking
  • Healthy eating
  • Antisocial behaviour
  • Road safety
  • Fire safety

Sex and Relationship Education (SRE) is another important part of the PSHE program.  SRE aims to increase students' understanding about the physical, emotional and social aspects of human relationships, complementing the parental role in educating students on sexual matters.  Students are encouraged to develop attitudes of tolerance towards the religious, cultural and moral values of others in relation to family organisation and sex-related issues, while ensuring students are confident regarding their growing maturity and personal health.
