Rewards and Sanctions
INTRODUCING OUR NEW REWARDS POLICY
Rewards are an important aspect of school life. At Chelmer Valley High School, we want to celebrate the successes of our students inside and outside of the classroom.
We understand the importance of recognising, praising and rewarding our students in a way that is meaningful to them. We seek to use methods that students are motivated by and that inspire the students to achieve well. We will ensure that, regardless of ability and age all students across the school will be able to benefit from the rewards process.
In wanting all students to be recognised we will use ‘merits’ which can be awarded for: effort in class, good behaviour, excellent work, sporting excellence, exceptional performance outside of school, being helpful, etc. Once certain thresholds have been met a communication will be made home to celebrate the students’ success. Other rewards will include skipping the lunch queue and a celebration morning with the Headteacher. We will record student achievements in their Careers Folder throughout their time at the school.
All students will start off each academic year with 1000 merits, this can be added upon with achievement ‘merits’ and deducted from with ‘demerits’. Demerits will be given when a student receives a sanction for not following the school’s behaviour policy or meeting expectations. Furthermore, when we take students out of school for educational visits we need to trust that they will behave in a positive manner; therefore, any student below the threshold of 1000 merits will not be allowed to go on any educational visits.
We will continue to use CVHS badges to recognise achievement. Students must reach 2000 merits (earn another 1000) to achieve a “Gold Swan Badge” for that year. If students achieve the “Gold Swan Badge” in Year 7, 8 and 9, then when they hit the 2000 merit mark in Year 10 they will then be awarded with the “Platinum Swan Badge”.
At the end of the academic year, a new Rewards Trip will replace the existing House Trip so that we can ensure that students are fairly recognised for their achievements. More information will follow later in the year.
