Welcome to OCR Cambridge National Health and Social Care 

The Cambridge National in Health and Social Care will encourage students to: 

  • Understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of the rights of individuals, person- centred values, effective communication and how to protect individuals in health and social care settings. 

  • Develop learning and practical skills that can be applied to real-life contexts and work situations. 

  • Think creatively, innovatively, analytically, logically and critically  

  • Develop independence and confidence in using skills that would be relevant to the health and social care sector and more widely. 

This qualification will help students to develop:  

  • Valuable communication skills that are extremely attractive in the modern workplace. 

  • An understanding of the rights of individuals and person-centred values and how to apply these when working with service users. 

  • Vital knowledge and understanding of how to protect individuals through infection prevention, safeguarding and safety and security measures.  

  • An understanding of growth and development through the life stages. 

  • An understanding of life events and how to support individuals through them. 

  • Transferable skills, such as evaluation, planning, presentation/delivery and research skills.

How are students assessed? 

R033 - Supporting Individuals through life events and R034 - Creative and therapeutic activities are both Non-Examined assessments (NEA).  This means they are assessed through a series of tasks for a set assignment that the students will be given in school.  The assignment is set by OCR, marked by the teacher and then moderated by OCR. 

R032 Principles of care in health and social care settings is an examined unit where students will sit a one-hour 15-minute examination paper, which is set and marked by OCR. 

Rationale and School Context

This is a new subject being offered for September 2025.  This is to support the variety of options students can take at KS4 and gives a vocational choice with small practical elements to the course.  One of the key areas of development of the school is: Continue to raise the aspirations and ambitions of all students in the school, so that students are inspired to achieve beyond their expectations.  This course will support students to raise their aspirations about their careers choice and further study at KS5. This subject also support the schools rationale to: Continue to review the curriculums for all subjects so that they meet the needs of all students across the school.  This subject gives students the opportunity to cover all ages across the lifespan rather than focus on Childhood (Early Years) in Child Development at KS4. Students are able to complete a mixture of Non-examined assessment and examination.  60% NEA and 40% exam. 

KS3 Context

Students have limited experience of Health and Social Care as a subject at KS3.  Some basic elements of health education will have been covered in Personal Development lesson at KS3, but not to KS4 level.  For example, relationships, safeguarding and infection prevention - KS3 Food lesson and personal hygiene.

Skills

Communicating effectively with individuals or groups. Communication is at the heart of health and social care and is taught or applied in all units.

Researching topic areas and recording research sources, then using them to interpret findings and present evidence.

Planning creative activities or health promotion campaigns, this will involve managing time and identifying aims, purpose, resources, methods.

Creating, presenting/delivering information to a group or an individual.

Students will also learn basic sign language on the course

Qualities

The qualities students will develop on the course are patience, care and compassion for others.  Health and Social care involves to support an care for those of all ages and abilities.  

Knowledge

Students may have some knowledge of health and social care services if they or a family member has used them.  Students can also apply the values of the school for example, supportive, respectful, community  and successful.  These should be applied to all people.  Students will have some knowledge of the importance of safeguarding and will have learnt about mental health within PD lessons.
